Inside every thin person is a fat person trying to come out!

Fat people have one thing in common: they all invariably used to be thin! For the unlucky few, weight problems started very early in life. However, for most people undesired weight gain begins after the teenage years, most likely in the 30s.

These thoughts occurred to me as I introduced my friends to the newly launched Fat Creep™ weight tracker on iPhone, iPad and Android phones. Most of my friends were glad to have a dedicated weight tracker with all the benefits that Fat Creep™ offers; I was nonetheless struck by the few people that clearly stated that they never weigh themselves because their weight had never been an issue before. This made sense as most of my friends are still very young and active, aged 25 – 30 and generally still don’t have kids. Unfortunately, they simply didn’t 'get' that most people don’t realize they have put on weight until they’ve piled on a scary amount of it.

Possible fat creep triggers include:
  • Moving from an active university or school life to a sedentary desk job; it usually cannot be helped
  • No longer being able to exercise for instance because of an injury or young children that you can’t get anyone else to look after whilst you go out to exercise
  • Increasing availability of food – both junk and healthy food. Nowadays every corner shop and supermarket has a tasty little delight that they are trying to get you consuming. If you go back even a couple of decades this ubiquitousness of food simply wasn’t there. This becomes a bigger problem every year. It’s especially a problem in the developed world where consumption and more consumption has become a way of life.
  • Moving from a low portion country to a high portion country. I did a 6-week stint in New York a few years back and I was flabbergasted by the portion sizes. The food was delish but every meal was 3 to 4 times a standard London portion AND half the price or less! At first, I resisted but by the end of 6-weeks I found myself adapting so much so that I was annoyed by the stingy London portions when I got back. Had I stayed in New York, fat would surely have become me. Most of us were brought up not to waste and to finish our food so leaving food doesn’t come natural.
  • Moving house. The stress of moving makes you eat more but in addition, it takes time to find the local gyms and parks in a new area so it’s quite natural to pile on a few pounds leading up to a house move.
  • The list is pretty endless
I used to be smug, and it took a serious case of fat creep for me to acknowledge that weight gain can happen to ANYBODY. Everyone in your family may be slim but that does not mean you have a get out of jail free card when it comes to weight stability. Track your weight to ensure you stay at the weight you want to be - your ‘happy weight range’™.

The Fat Creep™ weight tracker offers you the option to get a reminder to weigh-in as infrequently as once every four weeks if your weight is generally stable. But the ideal option for you may be once a week, or once a day: you decide.
