Random Thoughts

Every diet works for someone, no diet works for everyone

We thought it was high time we outlined our philosophy on weight here at Fat Creep. Fat Creep™'s philosophy of successful weight maintenance is based on two stages:

1. Get Sexy - getting sexy is all about knowledge
2. Stay Sexy - staying sexy is all about good habits: preventing fat from creeping up on you...

Why 'sexy'?
  • Losing weight is usually more than just a health concern; it's very entrenched in feeling desirable, wanted and good about yourself;
  • If fat equalled sexy many would choose being fat over being healthy as is the case in some parts of Asia and Africa. People want to look good to themselves as well as to others;
  • You can define what you believe 'sexy' is; 'sexy' doesn't imply a desire for 'intimacy', for example, when people call a car sexy they simply mean the car is beautiful, they want to spend time in it and show it off to their friends!
  • Finally, sexy is unisex - both men and women want to feel and be perceived as sexy.

We at Fat Creep™ differentiate between skinny (or thin) and sexy. We frown upon skinny. Let us illustrate:

Looking for contributions of pictures of skinny men! Seriously, we can't seem to find any. All the images found were of anorexic men or fat men. The skinny guys seem to be keeping their clothes firmly on; or maybe they just know when to stop dieting. Hmm?

1. Get Sexy

Most diets are 100% focused on weight loss - or getting sexy; we break getting sexy down as follows:

A. Knowing more about the body helps you to set your own targets.
  • Literally every diet uses the body mass index (BMI) as it's point of reference. For many people, that is all it is: a point of reference. It has flaws and sometimes using it to target an appropriate weight can be discouraging. Learning different metrics e.g. the waist-to-hip ratio gives you a choice over what you want to target.
  • The second crucial element is disease. What illnesses does being fat make you vulnerable to? Losing weight is about looking good on the outside and being fit/healthy on the inside.

B. Knowing more about food helps you to make better decisions about what you eat.
  • Calorie counting is the best way to learn about what's in different foods. However, whilst it can be quite easy to track calories when you're feeling fat and frumpy, once you get sexy it becomes a huge chore.
  • To keep your food knowledge fresh (no pun intended) do a week of calorie counting once every 8 weeks or so.

C. Knowing more about yourself helps you to adjust your lifestyle in the most appropriate fashion.
  • Fact: every diet works for someone, no diet works for everyone. In order to discover what works for you, you need to try lots of different things.
  • EVERYONE has an opinion on weight maintenance and they will all be trying to influence what you do. Try all these different things and permanently adopt only what works for you.
  • The Fat Creep™ shop (US store, UK shop) show cases our favourite health and exercise gear from Amazon.

2. Stay Sexy

Unfortunately, getting sexy - as tough as it might seem when you are working towards it - is the easy bit. Lots of diets neglect this next phase entirely when it's just as important because having your weight fluctuate is a problem in itself.

A. Track your weight
  • There is no easier way to check if things have changed than to weigh yourself. It takes a while to acknowledge tighter clothes or to notice any weight gain in the mirror.
  • Use the Fat Creep™ Weight Tracker weekly (on iPhone, iPad and Android ) and you can take action to nip post-diet weight gain right in the bud.

B. Maintain the good habits. Fad diets are the antithesis to staying sexy
  • Once the diet is over you cannot go back to your 'normal eating habits'. This is why fad diets don't work. Cutting out a whole food group e.g. carbs is not sustainable in the long run.
  • Dieting should be about changing old bad habits and adopting new good ones; it needs to be a learning process as outlined in 'Get Sexy'. With a liquid diet or things like the Atkins diet, you don't learn good eating habits.

C. Re-count calories periodically to remind yourself what 'bad' food is.
  • Have a look at livestrong and myfitnesspal for calorie counting.
  • They don't work as well for weight tracking because the calorie counting features get annoying when you stop counting calories. This is why we created a dedicated weight tracker for you.
